Streetlight Program

Cobrahead Streetlight

The City of Raleigh is responsible for all streetlight installations in areas within our City limits on public streets. Requests for new installations originate with developers, field observations, annexations and citizens. The City works with our three energy providers, Progress Energy, Duke Energy, and the Wake Electric Membership Corp, to provide services for streetlights.

Transportation Operations Division staff coordinates the planning and installation of all new streetlights with each energy provider. We do not install lights in private parking lots or on private property. Each power company is responsible for
designing the streetlight systems for all public streets within the city limits, both in residential and commercial areas. All of our streetlight designs follow the Standards for Roadway Illumination as established by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America.

The City's standard streetlight facilities consist of wooden poles with "cobra head" fixtures. We also work with our energy providers to install cut-off fixtures that comply with the goals of the Dark Skies Initiative, which aim to reduce light pollution. We also work with new developments that wish to upgrade their lighting with fiberglass poles or decorative fixtures.
