Upcoming Classes
Bookmaking: Travel Journal
Pullen Arts Center is hosting, "Travel Journal", on Tuesday evenings March 27th - May 1st, from 6:30-9pm, with Kathy Steinsberger. Travel has an element of the unexpected, of adventure, and an awareness of something new. The travel journal has to be compact and sturdy, but also adaptable to change and the unexpected. Most importantly, it must be able to hold a variety of treasures safe. This class will make a soft cover journal with pockets, foldouts, windows, and a multitude of ways to incorporate memories and mementos into a variety of book forms. Fan books, stab books, rubber band books, tacket books, and pamphlet books will be made to tuck into the pockets and envelopes. We'll make paper buttons, and incorporate all types of papers for collecting specimens on your journey. Bring any maps or travel ephemera you would like to incorporate! A supply fee of $35-50 is due to the instructor on the first class. All levels welcome. The barcode for this class is 116702. The class fee for Raleigh residents is $88 and non-residents pay $100.

Pullen Arts Center is hosting, "Memoir Writing", offered on Saturdays, April 7th - May 12th, from 10:30am - 1pm, with instructor Tina Clark. This course provides students of diverse ages and levels of experience a chance to develop several short memoirs or a portion of a book-length memoir with in-class instruction, writing exercises and workshops. Instruction and exercises on the elements of the writing craft will strengthen students' ability to explore and express their memories and life experiences as creative nonfiction. Workshops will offer a friendly, safe environment for students to share work, give and receive constructive criticism, and be inspired by one another. Supplies: Writing notebook and pen or pencil. Students may also bring a personal laptop. Instructor will provide handouts and class readings. The barcode for this class is 117350. Painting: A Look into the Abstract
Pullen Arts Center is hosting, "A Look into the Abstract", on Wednesday evenings April 11th - May 16th, from 7 - 9:30pm, with instructor Leslie Pruneau. The word abstraction indicates a departure from reality in depiction of certain imagery in art. Words like nonfigurative, nonobjective, and nonrepresentational art may come to mind. At times it may simply be stated as a work that does not look like anything in reality. I refer to abstract painting as 'pure painting'. Quite simply, it is the composition of shapes on a picture plane and how the artist chooses to treat the edges of those shapes. But one thing is for sure, the choices are immeasurable. While emphasizing line, color, geometric forms or subtle graded values, the artist must pull from their own experiences in art. This class is not for the beginner; the student must be confident in their medium. In the first class, we will draw so bring an 18x24 pad of paper and graphite or charcoal. From then on, it is an open medium course; painting or drawing is allowed. Bring own supplies. A different exercise will be explored each week. The barcode for this class is 117275. The class fee for Raleigh residents is $85 and non-residents pay $97.
